Dear Parent or Guardian:

The Chancellor will make the city-wide decision to close or delay the opening of schools during stormy weather after consultation with other City officials. All authorized delayed openings will result in the regular starting time being two hours later.

By 6:00 A.M., the decision is announced on the 311 Information Line, on the Department of Education website Home Page (which can be accessed at http://www.schools.nyc.gov).

The Division of Public Affairs will notify the news wire services, radio and television stations as soon as possible prior to 6:00 A.M.  School staff and parents should be advised to listen to information broadcast by any of the following radio stations: WINS (1010 AM), WCBS (880 AM), WLIB (1190 AM), WBLS (107.5 FM), WNYE (91.5 FM), as well as  the following television stations:  WCBS (Channel 2), WNBC (Channel 4), WNYW (Fox Channel 5),  WABC (Channel 7), WNYE (Channel 25), and “NY 1” (Channel 1 on cable television).

The contact person at our school is Kenneth Zapata.  The school telephone number to call is 718-698-4200.  The regular school hours are 8:18 A.M. to 3:00 P.M.  If there is an authorized delayed school opening the school hours will be 10:18 A.M. to 3:00 P.M.   The Parent Coordinator for this school is Debra Rabinowitz, 718-698-4200, extension 1151.

When there is an authorized citywide school closing or delayed school opening, the following will be cancelled unless the Chancellor makes an announcement to the contrary:  All field trips, all after-school programs (including Community-Based Organization after-school programs on public school sites), and all after-school program transportation (including transportation to after-school programs at Community-Based Organization sites).

It is expected that when there is a delayed opening, students will be in school until their regular dismissal time.  However, if citywide emergency conditions or a storm worsen, the Chancellor may have to announce an early dismissal.  The Chancellor will notify bus services of the earlier dismissal schedule.  You should advise your child to tell the teacher if no one is at home at the time of an authorized early dismissal.  You should have plans in place with a relative, friend or neighbor in case your child is released early and you will not be home to care for him or her.  Your child should know of this plan.  Please note that you must have listed that relative, friend or neighbor on the school’s “BLUE EMERGENCY CONTACT CARD” because schools are not authorized to release pupils to persons not listed on that card.  You should make certain that the card is up-to-date.  If your child takes a school bus, school staff will remain in school with the bused children until buses arrive for dismissal or until your child is picked up.

If you have a child with a disability, you should use your discretion in deciding whether to send  him or her to school when there is a delayed opening.  If your child has medical or other health issues requiring nursing or other services, during the school day, including services requiring a nurse or paraprofessional to ride on the bus, you should consider not sending your child to school.   Please be reminded that your child will not be picked up if a nurse or paraprofessional who is required to ride with him or her is not aboard the school bus.

Again, contact the 311 Information Line, access our website Home Page at http://www.wagnerhigh.net and listen to the radio or television stations listed above for information.

Thank you for your cooperation.

Sincerely,

Gary M. Giordano
Principal

ACADEMIC SCHOOL YEAR 2009-2010

PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE:

Dear Parents and Guardians,

As we begin the 2010 spring term, I would like to take this opportunity to encourage you to begin early monitoring your children’s progress. Ask to see your child’s class contracts (good indicators of grading policy and class expectations), daily class notes, completed homework assignments, and graded quizzes and tests. Our Parent/Teacher Conference is scheduled for Thursday, March 18, from 6:00 P.M. to 8:30 P.M. and Friday, March 19, from 12:30 P.M. to 3:00 P.M. Please mark these dates on your calendar.
I would also like to remind you of the wide range of Academic Intervention Services tutoring available to your children at Susan E. Wagner High School. Our tutoring schedule is posted on the school website (students should speak to their teachers or department assistant principals). School day tutoring is available daily and after school and immediately prior to the January, June and August Regents exams. Please refer to the schedule posted on the school website. Additionally, Supplemental Educational Services tutoring is available for those students who are free lunch eligible on Wednesdays and Thursdays from 3:00 – 5:00 P.M.
Parental involvement coupled with strong academic instruction are the key components of a successful high school experience. Although we inform parents on a regular basis regarding absences, lateness and cutting, it is imperative that parents communicate with their children regarding academic progress. Please know that student’s class grades and Regents grades will be the deciding factor in whether they meet PSAL eligibility requirements and most importantly graduate from high school.
Our College Office continues to help our students prepare for the world of higher education. On Tuesday, March 23, Susan E. Wagner High School will be hosting its annual College and Career Night at the school. I am pleased to report that well over 70 college and career representatives will be present to talk to our students and their families.
I look forward to many more exhilarating events at our school over the next several months. This includes: International Festival, Spring Concert and Art Show, School musical “42nd Street,” the Black Box production of “The Crucible” and a variety of Senior class events.

Sincerely,

Gary M. Giordano
Principal

Additionally, we will be offering one workshop per week covering a variety of topics and parents may sign up for as many sessions as they want.  These programs are supported through Title I and Title III funding.  It is our goal to use this funding to encourage parents to become active participants in the Wagner community and provide them with the tools necessary to guide their children and ensure academic success.
